SUMMARY:HMN Quarterly Meeting “The future of work – on fears and hopes”
DESCRIPTION:The main topic at our May Humanistic Management Network Internal webinar was “The future of work – on fears and hopes”. The meeting started with a short information considering Artificial Intelligence and introduction of the panelists: Anna Suchocka\, Kemi Ogunyemi and Carlos Largacha-Martinez. The meeting was divided in two parts: presentations by speakers and short Q&A. \nAnna Suchocka was sharing results of her research about remote work in Polish public sector. In the beginning\, before the pandemic both employees and employers felt good with it; situation changed slowly with deevaluation and depratiation of remote work. Anna underscored the new\, important need for sensitivity on the “user” side in the age of inevitable technological progress and postpandemic liquidity of reality. \nKemi Ogunyemi did a presentation considering her and Adaora I. Onaga’s book “Responsible Management of Shifts in Work Modes – Values for a Post Pandemic Future“\, in which she pointed out the blurr between office and home time\, efficiency of the employees work and how it’s connected with their well-being. Talking about the shift of the values\, she asked how to translate the culture to the remote models in ethical\, considerable way. \nCarlos Largacha-Martinez considered both hopes and challenges rising from the usage of Argumented Intelligence – AI that needs to understand the valuses\, ethics and be created with human centred focus. Accenting the difference between the organizational flourishment and the happiness\, he pointed out the synchronisity and mutual help that such coexistance can give. \n  \nThe meeting was attended by 35 people from 7 countries (Poland\, Austria\, Switzerland\, Quatar\, Nigeria\, South Africa\, Japan). \n  \nReport authors: Maria Pieniazek & Jakub Wydra. \n  \nThis research was funded by the Priority Research Area Heritage under the program Excellence Initiative – Research University at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.

SUMMARY:Methodological Workshop on Meaningful Humanistic Management Research
DESCRIPTION:The meaningfulness in research – that was the main topic at our April HMN Methodological workshop. The whole meeting was led by Katarzyna Kope? and Anna Góral divided into 3 parts. \nThe first one\, after a brief introduction\, focused on our plans for 2022. Then\, a short talk about reasons for humanistic management research followed – Anna Góral shared her recent stories about academic challenges connected with “conflict” between the University “points” and prestige versus the researcher satisfaction and ethics. \nIn the second part all participants had the chance to share their approach. We did a short introduction talking about our research and academic interests. Then\, each group (4-5 people from different backgrounds) discussed main topics: what is a meaningful research and how to measure this? What makes the humanistic management humanistic: theme\, methodology\, the potential for a change\, or maybe all of the above? \nLast but not least\, chairs of the groups shared the effects of the discussions. The fundamentals of humanistic management such as wide scope of perspectives\, topics\, trends were underlined. Then\, the questions followed: how do we measure the meaningfulness and is it even measurable? Is the impact always meaningful and is it most important? And simply – is it even a good idea to measure humanistic values? \nThe meeting was ended with an announcement of future plans (suggesting the guests-participants of next\, may’s discussion) and an invitation to work on a joined publication. \nThe meeting was attended by 22 people from 6 countries (Poland\, Austria\, Switzerland\, India\, Nigeria\, South Africa). \n  \nReport authors: Maria Pieniazek & Jakub Wydra. \n  \nThis research was funded by the Priority Research Area Heritage under the program Excellence Initiative – Research University at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.

SUMMARY:2021 Annual Humanistic Management Conference taking place online
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Ninth Annual Humanistic Management Conference will take place online and is brought to you by our Chapters from around the world on the theme of Solutions. \nWe all use the word solution numerous times on any single day and yet we may not always have a clear view on what actually is a solution. We want to hire solution-oriented people to join our organizations; we want politicians to offer solutions to the challenges we face; we want businesses to provide products and services that deliver solutions; and we ourselves want to feel productive by developing and implementing solutions. But who will be able to derive meaningful benefits from those solutions? Who determines what resources are provided for solutions geared towards maintaining the status quo versus those challenging it? \nSolutions are wanting in this world\, but what differentiates a solution from a quick fix or a remedy\, (how) can we know if a hailed solution will create adverse side effects? For how long must a solution provide a solution to be a solution? Why are we so receptive for the temptations of solutionist narratives? \nThese are some of the questions we will discuss at this year’s edition of the Annual Humanistic Management Conference\, but to enrich our practical understanding of the theme\, we shall also provide plenty of examples of policies\, organizations and individuals that deliver solutions aligned to Humanistic Management principles. \n  \nView the Conference Website

DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Eighth Annual Humanistic Management Conference will take place online and is brought to you by our Chapters from around the world on November 04. – 06. 2020 \nOur 2020 conference will be different from our previous conferences as it will be our first online conference and the driving force behind this year’s conference format are contributions by our Chapters from around the world. We wanted to make productive use of the circumstances and turn a challenge into an opportunity. So if we cannot be together in one place at least we can virtually be in all the places where our community is active. Consequently this year’s conference theme\, Unity in Diversity has a dual connotation. \nOn one hand we want to use the decentral character of the online format to to celebrate the diverse and rich community that forms the Humanistic Management Network and unites our members behind our shared purpose. We\, the Humanistic Management Network\, show Unity in Diversity. On the other hand we find our world increasingly divided with ever more voices tuning in to toxic narratives of division\, exclusion\, separation\, suppression and aggression. We know these narratives are not only false but also unable to guide us towards any desirable outcomes; we know that that which unites us is much bigger\, stronger\, more relevant and more beautiful than that which separates us. So we will show during this conference that there is Unity in Diversity and how business can exercise agency to embrace and promote diversity to the benefit of all stakeholders involved. \nView the Conference Website

This event is part of a Master level course on development at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland.\n \nThis Master level course at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland is addressing some central questions of development thinking organized in two blocks. \nThe first block is focused on the participants researching and presenting cases of development programs that are representative of different streams in development theory. These are growth theories\, modernization theory\, dependency theories\, the Washington and post-Washington consensus and the capabilities approach. \nThe second block is then taking place in Geneva\, Switzerland at the Palais des Nations\, the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva and is focused on meeting and interacting with development practitioners. The second block therefore serves to bring to life the theoretical part of this course while offering the oportunitiy to learn about real cases of development work and meet the people who are delivering them.

SUMMARY:Humanistic Management and the Business and Human Rights Discourse
DESCRIPTION:The Business and Human rights Forum of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations (OHCHR) is the major annual multi-stakeholder event on the topic of business and human rights (BHR). For the fifth consecutive time we are joining the Forum with a Humanistic Management Delegation from the 25th – 27th November 2019 in Geneva.\n \nThis year’s Forum is taking place from the 25th to the 27th of November 2019 in the Geneva headquarters of the United Nations\, the Palais des Nations. While the foundation for our definition of Humanistic Management is the unconditional respect for the dignity of life\, the preamble of the  Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that the “recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom\, justice and peace in the world.” Given this overlap between the foundations of Humanistic Management and the Business and Human Rights Discourse we look forward to inspired discussions and a lively exchange at the 2019 Business and Human Rights Forum. \nPlease get in touch if you are interested in joining the Humanistic Management delegation and you can take a look at the BHR Forum website here: http://www.ohchr.org/2019ForumBHR \n

SUMMARY:The Value of Values: Lecture at Nottingham Business School China
DESCRIPTION:On November 21st 2019 a public lecture took place titled The Value of Values at Nottingham Business School China in Ningbo\, close to Shanghai. This event was organized by our China Chapter lead Pinping Fu and Ernst von Kimakowitz delivered the talk.   \nValues are omnipresent in our words and actions; we use values implicitly and explicitly in our speech and they guide our behavior. But what are values\, what do they do with and for an individual\, an organization and a society and how do they create value? This lecture will provide a definition of values\, demonstrate their effect on the self (individual)\, on interpersonal relationships (organizational) and on society (systemic) concluding that values create value. They function as an anchor for reflection and give individuals orientation\, they strengthen the sense of belonging and create trust in an organization and they support societal development by enhancing its resilience and strengthening its institutions. In short\, strong values and Humanistic Management go hand in hand in creating sustainable value. \nWe are very happy to grow our presence in China under the leadership of Pingping Fu\, Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Nottingham Business School China and look forward to deepening our collaboration with the university and beyond.

SUMMARY:2019 Annual Humanistic Management Conference in Poland
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Seventh Annual Humanistic Management Conference will take place on October 10. and 11. 2019 in Krakow\, Poland organized and sponsored by the Institute of Culture of Jagiellonian University in Krakow\, Cracow University of Economics\, Silesian University of Technology and the Weltethos Institute. \nBusiness is not a self-serving exercise as we rightfully expects business to make a positive impact on society\, acting with solidarity and actively catering to the common good. While this expectation stands in conflict with a singular focus on maximizing shareholder value\, we argue that it is fully aligned with Humanistic Management principles which aim to deliver sustainable value along the triple bottom line. \nAt our 2019 conference we will therefore discuss the nexus between solidarity\, the common good and Humanistic Management. We will assess and test the hypothesis that acting with solidarity and the catering to the common good are part and parcel of a Humanistic Management paradigm just as much as they are a necessity for us to find solutions to some of the most pressing challenges we face as a global community. \n  \nView the Conference Website

SUMMARY:Public Lecture on Key Drivers in Humanistic Management in Japan
DESCRIPTION:This lecture by Ernst von Kimakowitz\, co-founder of the Humanistic Management Network\, was focused on key drivers in Humanistic Management with a subsequent Q&A session. \nTo conceptualize Humanistic Management we have developed a set of key drivers that pave the road towards the humanistic management paradigm which we lay out in the Three Stepped Approach to Humanistic Management. These key drivers are purpose and legitimacy\, passion and integrity and love. \n\nPurpose: Purpose is defined as knowing why a business does what it does. Understanding the true rationality for its existence goes much deeper than being able to provide an accurate depiction of activities. Purpose provides the foundation for an organizational mission.\nLegitimacy: Legitimacy is used as a proxy for public desirability of an organization and the purpose it is perusing. Legitimacy is thus a moderator for purpose as it ensures the alignment of societal needs and expectations with the purpose of a business as well as the way in which it is following that purpose.\nPassion: In Humanistic Management Passion describes an attitude towards work rather than the big gestures we sometimes ascribe to passionate people. In fact true passion does not need to be “loud”\, much more it expresses itself through the attention to detail in delivering every day work.\nIntegrity: Just as legitimacy functions as a moderator for purpose\, integrity acts as a moderator for passion. Passion can make blind for externalities caused by activities and transparently saying what one does and doing what one sais helps to guide passion towards the generation of societal value.\nLove: It is striking how difficult it is for most of us to use the word love in business contexts. Yet it is a very powerful driver. Love for an activity\, the people we do it with and the people we do it for describes a deep connection with that activity and fills us with intrinsic motivation.\n\nThe event saw over 200 students attending with a lively discussion following the lecture by Ernst von Kimakowitz\, co-founder of the Humanistic Management Network. The lecture and discussion which took place on the 7th of July 2016 were impeccably organized by dean Kuriyama of Soka University’s business faculty with acclaimed interpreter Rié Kasahara translating the event into Japanese.
