Colombia Chapter

During the Summer Break of 2021, HMN and Areandina launched a Virtual Short-Course about ‘Purposeful Global Organizations’ on the Cloud, as one option for the prerequisite for Undergraduate Business Students’ graduation. More than 100 voluntarily registered, which was a great surprise for us. One year ago the HMN-Colombia chapter defined the material that students will review in the 8-week course, divided into four modules: 1. Global Platforms for Purposeful Organizations, including HMN, B-Corps, MIX, SMI and Councious Capitalism; 2. Inner Leadership, including reflection and how to erode defensive routines; 3. Sustainable Capitalism, including the triple-bottom line approach and the B-Evaluation; and 4. Invitation to be Brave: How to be a Humanistic Manager, including readings from our HMN-Palgrave Collections. This Fall 2021, another group of 25 is taking the 8-week course and we will continue improving it, so our goal is that businesses will participate.

San Francisco Entrepreneurs’ Network: Supporting our FlourishingAI, HMN and Areandina had a session where several businesspeople, consultant and a futurologist sat together to discuss the best way to launch in 2022 our project. It was a great meeting where we were able to see the challenges from different perspectives.

FlourishingAI receives support from Fulbright-MinCiencias. Our HMN-Colombia’ Chapter Leader was awarded with the Visiting Professor Fulbright Fellowship to do a short post-doctoral visit to USA, specifically the University of Miami and Florida International University. At the end of the 5-month visit, our HMN-Areandina project, FlourishingAI, end up with the first draft of the User Interface of the future service in Innovation in Management for companies. Also, the humanistic approach of human-machine interaction was strengthen by the great social-philosopher and supporter Dr. John W. Murphy.

Cinematographer Laura Riaño has made a documentary film that is part of a bigger project about female inclusion and cultural traditions. The core of this short documentary is a company called ‘Las Mazamorras de Urabá’, where the founders, Doña Ceci & Ángela, have been doing beautiful, marvelous, courageous, and humanistic work. The Humanistic Management Network, Colombia Chapter, has been supporting and collaborating ‘Las Mazamorras de Urabá’ over the last two years. During four months of the Fall 2018, nine Purpose-Driven Companies were analyzed in order to know their impact on women and youth inclusion. Two companies from Kenya and seven from Colombia. The Colombia Chapter of the Humanistic Management Network is hosting, organizing and co-organizing a series of events in April 2019. Among those are:

• A talk on Purpose Driven Organizations and Humanistic Management during the International Culture and Business Week with the 2019 guest country being Germany at Fundación Universitaria del Área Andina.
• A series of five workshops, each being split into two parts delivered by our sister organization the Humanistic Management Center. The first part focusing on themes related to Humanistic Management and the second part being focused on further developing the participants’ research skills.
• Thirdly the Colombia Chapter of the Humanistic Management Network is hosting a round table event with the main international organizations promoting purpose driven business in Bogotá. Those are Systema-B (B-Corp), Comunidad F and the Impact HUB Bogota.

The Colombia Chapter of the Humanistic Management Network is embarking on a research project based on the following premises. The social problem is current alienating social interactions. The end result is lower-than-possible human flourishing and authenticity. The workplace is showing low rates of engagement and low humanistic management practices. As we have research thoroughly, this demotivating job reality has spillover effects on society: solitude, depression, family violence, disengagement, blue-collar crime, among others.
