About the Humanistic Management Network Poland Chapter
The Poland Chapter of the Humanistic Management Network is focused on developing and disseminating knowledge for Humanistic Management with an emphasis on culture and media sectors and contemporary challenges as climate crisis or inequalities.
Therefore the chapter builds bridges to cultural institutions, media enterprises, NGOs and businesses to strengthen the position of Humanistic Management as an academic field and a management practice. The Polish chapter also aims to develop the methodology for Humanistic Management and boost its position in the academic training of managers – the Faculty of Management and Social Communication at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków was the first in Poland to confer academic titles in Humanistic Management. The mission of the Poland chapter is being accomplished through various activities, including seminars, lectures, publications or informal meetings. For example in 2014 the Institute of Culture at the Jagiellonian University organized the groundbreaking conference Zarzadzanie humanistyczne: zakres, metody, paradygmaty / Humanistic Management: scope, methods, paradigms. But most importantly we try to create an engaged community of people: involving students, scholars, practitioners, activists, policy makers, and entrepreneurs. Although we may come from different backgrounds we share the idea of a humanistic approach towards organizations.

Anna Góral is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Culture, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland.
Agnieska Konior is Lecturer at the Institute of Culture at the Jagiellonian University.
Monika Kostera is Management Professor at the Jagiellonian University and Södertörn University.
Tomasz Kwarcinski is associate professor in the Department of Philosophy at Krakow University of Economics.
Alina M. Landowska is assistant professor at SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Warsaw.
Michal Palasz is culture & media manager, activist and academic teacher working at Jagiellonian University.
Anna Pluszynska, Faculty of Management and Social Communication at the Jagiellonian University.
Weronika Pokojska is focused on heritage management in the field of corporate heritage and its impact.
Michal Szostak, Associate Professor of Management and Doctor of Musical Arts, focused on the art of management and management of art.

Humanistic Management in the Public Sector

Palgrave Macmillan Humanism in Business Series
The idea of humanistic management has already been deeply explored by scholars looking at private business. However, this concept still requires increasingly serious consideration within the public sector studies. The starting point for this book’s foray into the topic is that there are two major trends observed in public sector and public service research: a demand for science (which is an older notion related to new public management and to evidence-based policy) and a demand for humanism which is a recent tendency. In response to this demand for humanism, we would like to analyse the public sector through the lens of humanistic management, referring to its three-stepped approach – respect for human dignity, ethical reflection and decision-making, and stakeholder engagement. Therefore, we would like contributors to explore applications of humanistic management in the public sector. In 2022, Deloitte published a report, ‘Global Government Trends’, in which the most transformative trends in government today were listed, grouped under three themes: building resilience, connected for greater value, government for all people (Deloitte 2022). The elements of humanistic management are visible in their study; however, we would like to consider whether this is reflected in the practice of public sector management. The establishment of a humanistic approach in the public sector should be a launchpad for humanistic transformation in businesses and in other organisations.

Global Event Series Launched by the Poland Chapter of the HMN
On April 6th 2022 the Department of Management and Social Communication of the Jagiellonian University launched a series of events aiming to strengthen collaboration and operations of the Humanistic Management Network. The events consist of a series of Methodological Workshops, Inter Chapter Panel Sessions, Leadership Gold Conversations and HMN Development workshops to be held in Krakow, Poland.

Poland Chapter signs up top partner organizations
Since its launch in mid October 2019 the Poland Chapter of the Humanistic Management Network was able to set up partnerships with some of the countries top academic institutions in Gdansk, Krakow and Warsaw. We very much look forward to expanding our activities and growing the chapter in the spirit of creating mutually beneficial relationships and collaboration.

Diversity in Management – cross-continental meeting
January 19. 2023Hosted by the Jagielloniain University, Krakow, Poland
The topic of the meeting was: “Diversity in management – how to effectively implement a conscious hiring policy and inclusion of people with special needs”. The speakers were Beata Kowalska (Poland), and Lamona Rajah (South Africa). The moderators: Maria Pieni??ek, and Jakub Wydra. During the meeting were discussed the need to create policies aimed at eliminating discrimination and practical solutions involving people with disabilities in changing the organizational culture.

Women in Management – cross-continental meeting

The meeting’s guests were Lamona Rajah of the South Africa Chapter, Christina Schwabenland of the UK Chapter, Anna Góral of the Poland Chapter, and the moderator was Weronika Pokojska from the Poland Chaper. The topics discussed on the meeting: barriers faced by women in the process of gaining qualifications and taking leadership positions, the pressures of patriarchal culture, gender stereotypes, norms, and women’s work in cultural institutions.
